Soit un \(\mathbb{K}\)-espace vectoriel \(E\) de dimension finie \(n\) et deux endomorphismes \((u,v)\in L(E)\). Montrer que \[\mathop{\mathrm{rg}}u + \mathop{\mathrm{rg}}v \leqslant\mathop{\mathrm{rg}}(u\circ v) +n\]
( ).
On pourra étudier la restriction \(\widetilde{u}\) de \(u\) à \(\mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v\) et montrer que \(\mathop{\mathrm{Im}}\widetilde{u}= \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}(u\circ v)\) et \(\operatorname{Ker}\widetilde{u}=\operatorname{Ker}u \cap \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v\), puis appliquer le théorème du rang à \(\widetilde{u}\).

Considérons la restriction de \(u\) à \(\mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v\) : \(\widetilde{u}= u_{ | \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v}\). On vérifie facilement que \(\mathop{\mathrm{Im}}u\circ v = \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}\widetilde{u}\) et que \(\operatorname{Ker}\widetilde{u}=\operatorname{Ker}u \cap \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v\). En appliquant le théorème du rang à \(\widetilde{u}\), on trouve que \[\dim(\mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v) = \dim(\operatorname{Ker}u \cap \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v) + \mathop{\mathrm{rg}}(u\circ v)\] Mais \(\dim(\operatorname{Ker}u \cap \mathop{\mathrm{Im}}v) \leqslant\dim( \operatorname{Ker}u )\) et donc, en appliquant le théorème du rang pour \(u\), on trouve que \[\mathop{\mathrm{rg}}v \leqslant(n-\mathop{\mathrm{rg}}u) + \mathop{\mathrm{rg}}(u\circ v)\]
